I tip Mathare United or Tusker to win league crown

The Kenyan Premier League kicks-off today and just like I had done with the English Premier League, I am going to predict who will win the Kenyan crown.

If you can remember in my predictions of the EPL, I had tipped Chelsea to win the league with reigning champions Manchester United finishing a close second.

The tide has, however, changed and Manchester United are showing signs of champions form again while Big Phil’s Chelsea seem to be going down the table instead of up.

Despite what has happened, however, I am not ready to change my mind in as far as United are concerned but it could be a big task for Chelsea at the moment.

Liverpool will replace Chelsea as my candidates to win the league despite what the English media are calling a crisis at Anfield.

What crisis are they talking about? Yes, the Kops lost to Everton in the FA Cup action on Wednesday but that could be a blessing for Rafa Benitez in their pursuit of the elusive Premier League title.

They now only have the Premier League and the Champions League to chase and the European diadem is not their priority so I tip them to pip United for the title.

And just for the records, Liverpool completed a double over Chelsea this season after the 2-0 win at Anfield last Sunday and the last time they achieved that feat was when they won their last Premier

League title.

The showdown between fierce rivals United and Liverpool at Old Trafford could decide the league title, forget the much talked about match in hand that the Red Devils have over the Kop.

Enough said about the EPL and back to the main topic of this week, which is the KPL.

Most of the KPL clubs have been busy in the transfer window although I know most of the football fans might not have been following the local action like they have been keeping a keen eye on the dealings in the EPL.

New boys Sofapaka seem to be Manchester City of the KPL and they have signed a record 18 players before the season starts.

Coach Robert Matano is on record saying his team will compete on equal footing with the big boys on the big stage.

I couldn’t agree more with him after what he has done in the transfer market.

Signing, however, is another thing and getting the new players to give you the much needed results is another and that is why Sofapaka could be a mid table team this season.

Other new comers, AFC Leopards also have huge expectations but the football scene has changed since the time they ruled the roost.

I am sorry to disappoint Ingwe fans but they will be fighting more for survival than the league title.

The fight therefore at the top might not change much and I believe it will still be as close as it was last year although Tusker could replace Sony in giving champions Mathare United a hard time.

The Ruaraka-based brewers have been active in the transfer market while Mathare have added the creative touch of Titus Mulama in midfield.

Sony have lost most of their top players and will find it hard to dislodge Mathare and Tusker from the top. I therefore predict a fight between Mathare United and Tusker all the way to the wire.
