Kenyan champions Mathare United are in a ‘group of death’ in the Cecafa Club Championships to be held in Khartoum, Sudan, between June 30 and July 12.

Draw released yesterday by Cecafa General Secretary, Nicholas Musonye, put Mathare against Sudan champions El Merreikh, Rwanda winners Atraco and Djibouti’s Kartileh Djibsat in Group A.

“This year’s event will involve 12 teams who have been pooled in three groups of four teams each,” said Musonye.

Tusker FC, who won the championships last year in Dar es Salaam, are in Group C and will meet Burundi‘s AS Inter Stars, Zanzibar’s Miembeni and a team from Sudan yet to be named.

Former CAF Cup Winners Cup champions TP Mazembe are the guest team and are pitted against Uganda’s KCC, Tanzania Prisons and Benadir Telecom of Somalia in Group B. El-Merreikh SC have sponsored the event to the tune of Sh78m ($1m).

“This is the first time that a club is sponsoring a football championships and we are honoured to be hosting the regional event.

“We are sponsoring the event to a tune of Sh46.8m ($600,000). Besides, we would cater for the air tickets and accommodation for all teams which adds up to around Sh78m ($1m),” said Amin Yousif, El-Merreikh SC board member.
