Survivors of Eldoret’s Kiambaa Church arson are headed to the US for reconstructive surgery.

But they are yet to raise the Sh30 million required for treatment, and are appealing to the Government to help.

“Apart from Sh1.9 million the Government paid to Kijabe Hospital to clear the bill incurred by the children, we have not received anything else from them, neither have we been approached in regard to the fund for reconstructive surgery,” said Dr Joseph Mugachia, secretary at the Disaster Foundation of Kenya.

Early this year, a national public funds appeal was launched to raise the money.

Surgical costs

Officials of the foundation mandated to collect the cash said they have collected Sh12 million and need Sh18 million.

“The Shriner’s Children’s Hospital for burns in Sacramento, California, US, has admitted us for treatment from April 15. We will receive treatment at the hospital for about eight months. The hospital administration has donated inpatient medical and surgical costs estimated at about Sh6 million,” said Mary Kariuki, 16, one of the survivors.

The promise that they would benefit from the cash raised for the Sachang’wan and Nakumatt fire disasters has not been fulfilled.

Dr Mugachia, however, thanked the public for the overwhelming response.
