East African Breweries Limited (EABL) has set aside Sh32 million for development and upgrading of water and sanitation projects in seven towns.

The EABL Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of EABL and Ecotact, will implement the project.

EABL Foundation Chairman Gerald Mahinda said provision of water and sanitation is a key catalyst to meeting the Millennium Development Goals and Kenya’s Vision 2030.

“We recognise that water is a basic need and an important catalyst for economic and social development. We, however, cannot de-link water from sanitation especially in the informal settlements,” he said.

The EABL Foundation-Ecotact project will see the construction of 18 facilities in Nairobi, Kisumu, Kakamega, Eldoret, Nanyuki, Karatina and Thika where public water and sanitation facilities are inadequate.

Speaking during the launch of the project, Mr Mahinda said the new facilities will be hygienically sound with all relevant fittings for male and female toilets and showers.

“The aim is to provide appropriate ecological sanitation systems, in order to reduce water loss, contamination and thus improve environmental and public health,” said Ecotact Chairman Kamithi Nganga.

The blocks will also offer water vending points at each facility.

A water point, public information points, shoeshine centres, newspaper and magazine vendors, are also encompassed in the design.
