Minimise travel expenses in a weakened economy

Published on 24/09/2009

In the face of an economic downturn that may not allow self-indulgence, affordable fun travel can still be achieved.

1. Assess how much money you have: Cut back on unnecessary expenditure. Determine a travel budget first and then look for trips that fit within that price range.

2. Stay at hotels and hostels that are less costly: If you are accustomed to vacationing in five-star luxury hotels for weeks at a time, cut back and opt for moderate hotels that still provide the same services. Great deals can be found in four-star hotels with minimal difference in comfort. If staying at a five-star resort is a must, then reduce the amount of time spent there.

3. Do your research: Search the websites for exciting deals that will save you money and still give you a great and memorable holiday. Promotion deals are also availed by hotels and airlines.

4. Be flexible and travel off-season: Flying mid-week, for instance, may be cheaper than flying out on a weekend or during holiday seasons.

5. Stick close to home: Instead of travelling overseas to some exotic destination, try a vacation closer to home. Domestic airfare is often cheaper than flying to another country yet the getaway vacation will just be as great.
