My phone keeps switching itself off

I have a Chinese phone called G-Tide. The screen light goes on and off at will, but when I press somewhere below the screen, the lights come on, only to go off when I release it again.

Unlike popular brands, these Chinese phones are set differently. For phones like LG, Motorola and other well-known brands, the screen is placed on the main board, so that the lighting diodes are placed alongside the screen.

This allows them to light the screen from its sides, and illuminate it through the screen glass. The light is reflected towards you by a brilliant white paper. However, the model you have is different. Its main board is half the size of the phone, and the screen completes the other half of the phone, so the lighting is below the screen, and is transferred by clear thin plastics placed along its sides, but supported on the housing,

The diodes’ current is passed over through some ribbon cable that also carries the current to the screen, plus the information that is displayed to the screen.

Sometimes the cable wires that carry the current get detached from the main board cutting off the light due to the way they are attached, so the current only reaches the diodes when you press the main board. Regular servicing, especially soldering whenever there is any break down, is needed to keep your brand of phone going. This is its main weakness. You need to take your phone for soldering.

Why does my Verizon LG keep switching off on its own? Christopher Keya, Malindi.

Good mobile phones, like yours, are designed to switch themselves off, to avoid short-circuiting of the motherboard due to foreign matter.

Causes include moisture caused by letting the phone get rained on, holding it with wet hands, or dropping it in saline solution.

Others include children, especially those aged two years and younger, who may chew on the phone. The saliva could then seep into the sensitive electronic parts.

Circuit trippers embedded in the microchip or microprocessor trigger such shutdowns to protect the motherboard. To solve your problem, look for a qualified technician to service your phone.

He may have to open it up and clean it thoroughly.

You can also save yourself this problem in future by protecting your handset from contact with moisture.
