EDITOR’S NOTE - With Harambee Stars’ continued dismal performance, it is time Hey quit

Published on 05/11/2009

Does national team Harambee Stars coach Antoine Hey have any reason to continue with his job?

Following Tuesday’s 5-0 loss to Kuwait, Hey should resign honourably for failing to steer Stars to greater heights in line with Kenyans’ expectations.

Here is a coach who was hired and unveiled by none other than the Prime Minister of this country and paid what by Kenyan standards is a dizzying salary.

Worse still, he insists on getting his pay three months in advance and fails to come back home after international assignments.

But despite his comfort and pampering, Hey has failed to deliver time and time again. We are facing a crucial match against Nigeria in less than ten days and must win it at home to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in Angola.

Hey has failed and is a disgrace to this country. The faster he is got rid of, the better. It is also discouraging that Prime Minister Raila Odinga had the audacity to defend Hey.

Odinga’ s defence was that the coach needs time to deliver. Is the PM forgetting that the team was producing results before Hey came on board?

Is he forgetting how he used to come to the stadium to cheer the national team and left excited because the team had won?

Hey has already been paid his salary till the end of this month. We have nothing to lose by getting rid of him now.

We should quickly convene a team of local coaches to assemble the team for the Nigeria tie. This is one match that Kenya must win.
