Nepad picks new officials ahead of second Kenyan review

African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) officials have revealed they are set for the second review mission in Kenya, which starts this month.
The review kicks off on November 16 to 30 under the leadership of Dr Graca Machel.
It is being spearheaded by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad) Kenya Secretariat and will be conducted by 15 experts from across Africa.
The review follows an agreement made at the 10th Summit of the Committee of Heads of State and Government participating in the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM Forum) held on January 31, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Speaking at the Standard Group offices on Mombasa Road yesterday, APRM National Steering Committee Chairman Abdullahi Abdi said the second review mission would focus on governance and political pillars of the APRM.
"Many issues in the Agenda 4 were identified by citizens in the 2006 APRM country assessment report.
"APRM will, therefore, continue in collaboration with other organisations such as South Consultants to monitor progress being made," Abdi stated.
He had made a courtesy call on the Standard Group Deputy Chairman and Strategy Advisor, Paul Melly, who is the media representative in the APRM National Governing Council.
Others at the meeting included Nepad CEO Grace Ongile, APRM special interest groups representative Sam Kabue, youth representative Caren Wakoli and Standard Group Managing Director Paul Wanyagah.
Mr Abdi urged the media to play a core role to ensure the review process succeeds.
In his response, Mr Melly assured that the Standard Group would continue playing its role to ensure necessary reforms are realised.
"We remain proactively engaged in the APRM process. The media shape public opinion by facilitating debate on issues that affect the public," Melly said.
He called for the involvement of Kenyans in the ongoing reforms, arguing that this would help future generations. Melly said it is time the Government realised that the international community cannot the reforms and lauded Kenyans for their resilience in the push for a new constitution.
The oncoming review will mark the second time that Kenya will be subjected to the process. Dr Ongile said the second review would be different because it will involve Kenyans at all levels, who will give their views on what they feel needs to be done to address our problems.
