MPs spark row over centres of excellence

Western Province MPs have been accused of disregarding guidelines for selecting schools as centres of excellence.

The Kenya Secondary Schools Head Teachers Association Western branch chairman Kahi Indimuli said majority of MPs are ignoring regulations while selecting schools to benefit from a Sh30 million Government grant.

Mr Indimuli said differences over the selection of schools were rampant and urged Education Minister Sam Ongeri not to release funds to constituencies with disputes.

"There are many complaints and the cases need to be resolved before the funds are released," he said.

He said most provincial schools had been denied the funds on grounds that they were admitting students from all parts of the country.

"Most of the schools being given the money are district and day schools because the MPs are against schools that admit students from other areas," said Indimuli.

Speaking at Vihiga High School, he said yesterday controversy over selection of schools had been reported in Mumias, Ikolomani, Shinyalu and Butere constituencies.
